How can we use people, and local assets to make Wolverhampton a better place?

'South By South Wolverhampton' - Music Festival

Wolverhampton and the West Midlands has a rich musical history - why not celebrate this by having our own FREE 'South by Southwest' style live music festival showcasing regional talent?

A weekend of performances spread across the city could not only use the traditional venues such as the Civic & Wulfrun Halls, the Slade Rooms and numerous pubs, but also encourage cafes, restaurants and other less 'conventional' venues (even empty shops!) to hold performances.

With public perception of the city centre at an all time low, a major free event would encourage people into the city, generate income for local businesses and give residents a sense of pride.

The Diamond Jubilee and Olympic Torch relay have shown there is an appetite for coming together to celebrate, but both of these events celebrate national or international events - what not create something local, specific to Wolverhampton?

What we would need:

To make this idea happen we would need the support of the City Council's events team, local businesses, venue owners, local performers and volunteers to help run the event.

Alternatives:

  1. This could be an 'arts' festival as opposed to solely a music festival as this may have a wider appeal.

  2. instead of hosting the festival in the city centre West Park could be used, although this wouldn't have as many benefits for city centre businesses.
