If my GP were able to refer me there it would shorten the waiting lists for hospital appointments and free up the hospital appointments/waiting list
I have arthritis, my GP is not an expert so I have to be seen at rhumatology at New Cross. I know there is a GP in wolverhampton who is an expert in rhumatology. If my GP were able to refer me there it would shorten the waiting lists for hospital appointments and free up the hospital appointments for those who need to be seen in a hospital (needing x-rays or MRI).
Other GPs have other specialities, such as minor surgery or acupuncture.
If one day a week, or even a month GPs with a specialism could see patients from other practices it would lower NHS hospital costs. People would visit the hospital less and it would be easier and quicker to see a specialist. GPs who have previously worked as registrars in various specialisms could keep up to date with their skills.
Patient notes or a referral letter would be needed but this could easily be done electronically.
